In the 1800s, women working in English woollen mills were given long thin strips cut off the edge of the cloth. When these waste strips were lined up on edge or rolled in coils, they could be sewn into a thick mat. I have adapted their techniques to make my textile art. The wool strips from a number of blue, white and purple woollen blankets have been coiled, twisted, stacked and stitched. The complexity of fabric and thread merges to form a stylised Jacaranda. On moody evenings during spring, many Australian towns are coloured purple by Jacaranda blossoms. This piece relives the particular delight of lying on a purple carpet and looking at the sky.
