Hibiscus heterophyllus, or as it is commonly known native rosella, is a rather lovely but overlooked native Hibiscus. The flowers can be yellow, pink or white, and not only are they a very showy but they can be used in the kitchen. The First nation people ate the leaves, calyxes and flowers raw, or cooked them as a vegetable. The fruit ( or calyx) can be made into jam and syrups, and the petals make an attractive addition to salads.
