Taegan Stevens
Artist Statement
My work is about transforming the familiar into something unexpected. I use florals in unconventional ways, combining simplicity with intricate detail to create pieces that are bold, tactile and often more complex than they first appear. I love creating work that draws people in from a distance but rewards a closer look, revealing unexpected details, hidden elements and contrasts within the piece. I want each work to feel beautiful at first glance, but interesting enough that you want to keep looking.
Biography
Taegan Stevens aka Greenhouse of Crazy is a contemporary mixed-media artist creating bold, sculptural works from artificial florals and unconventional materials. Exploring colour, texture and form, she transforms familiar objects and materials into unexpected, one-of-a-kind pieces. With an unconventional pathway into the arts, Taegan’s practice is driven by experimentation, instinct and a love of creating work that refuses to fit neatly into one category. Her pieces sit somewhere between sculpture, floristry and design; playful, distinctive and intentionally a little unexpected.
Influences
My ideas can come from almost anywhere. Sometimes seeing a particular flower, object or moment instantly creates an entire piece in my mind; other times, works come to me completely formed in dreams. Once I can see a piece in my head, creating it becomes almost an obsession. My first artwork began with a dream, and I spent two years collecting the right florals and materials before I could finally bring what I had imagined to life.
