Artist Statement
Sandra’s paintings explore her emotional connection to the rural landscape. Inspired by the rolling pastures, rounded volcanic hills and expansive skies surrounding Clunes, her work seeks to capture atmosphere and feeling rather than an exact representation of place. The sky is often the starting point, with passing clouds, changing light and unexpected colours informing each composition. Through layered paint, carefully mixed colour and expressive gestures, Sandra creates landscapes that evoke a sense of familiarity and memory. Her works reflect the beauty, power and timelessness she finds in the natural environment and the ever-changing relationship between sky and land.
Biography
Sandra T Sanders is a formally trained artist and art educator based in the picturesque goldfields village of Clunes, Victoria. Growing up in Melbourne with a lifelong interest in art, Sandra completed a Bachelor of Fine Art, majoring in painting and drawing, before undertaking further qualifications in art and design education. Alongside her studio practice, she works full-time as an art teacher. From her garden studio in Clunes, Sandra creates atmospheric landscape paintings inspired by the rural environment surrounding her home. Her work celebrates the beauty and timelessness of the Australian landscape, with a particular focus on expressive skies, shifting light and the relationship between land and weather. Sandra joins Downlands under the collection of Aspire Gallery (Brisbane, Qld).
Influences
Sandra is strongly influenced by the rural landscape surrounding her home in Clunes and the wider Victorian goldfields region. She is particularly drawn to moody skies and the transitional light of early mornings and late afternoons, when colour, cloud and reflected light transform familiar surroundings.
