Phil Vercoe
Artist Statement
Phil’s work often reflects a deep appreciation for the natural world, exploring not only the visual beauty of a scene but also the feeling and experience of being immersed within it. Rather than simply documenting a place, his paintings seek to evoke atmosphere and connection, encouraging viewers to pause and engage with the world around them in a more contemplative way.
Biography
Phil works primarily in oils and acrylics, creating atmospheric works that balance technical precision with a strong emotional presence. Through careful layering and impasto techniques, he builds rich surfaces that invite closer inspection, allowing texture to become an integral part of the viewing experience. His ability to combine delicate tonal glazes with expressive brushwork and confident palette knife application brings a compelling sense of movement and drama to each piece, while his thoughtful use of light and colour captures fleeting moments and shifting moods within the landscape. His work has gained both national and international recognition, with paintings held in private collections throughout Australia and overseas. Phil joins Downlands under the collection of Aspire Gallery (Brisbane, Qld).
