Stuart Sims
Artist Statement
Working predominantly in oils, Stuart creates highly detailed still life paintings that bring attention to the overlooked and ordinary. From torn confectionery wrappers to nostalgic vintage toys, his work explores the form, colour and character found in everyday objects.
Biography
Born in St Helens, UK, Stuart Sims lived and worked in the Sultanate of Oman before emigrating to New Zealand in 1997, where he taught Art and Photography. After retiring in 2021, he began painting full time and relocated to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in 2023. His work is held in private collections across the UK, Oman, New Zealand and Canada. Stuart joins Downlands under the collection of Aspire Gallery (Brisbane, Qld).
Influences
Stuart’s practice is strongly influenced by the American Hyperrealist movement of the 1970s, which inspired his detailed, lifelike approach to painting. He finds inspiration in familiar everyday objects, particularly those with interesting forms, textures or a sense of nostalgia.
