Artist Statement
I create realistic art as a celebration of the natural world around us. Through detail, light and depth of colour, I aim to push beyond replication of a photograph to create art that resonates with the viewer. Using pastel as a medium helps to capture and convey this connection. I adore the softness and versatility of pastel, which facilitates a loose and whimsical approach or highly detailed work. Layering pastels allows colours to be dissected beyond our initial interpretation to build a rich yet believable colour palette. The unique nature of pastel adds life and character to the subject, providing an instant and welcoming glow.
Biography
Karen is a self-taught, emerging artist based in Toowoomba. Australian fauna and flora are frequently the subject of her work, reflecting her love and appreciation for this country. Karen’s coming-of-age journey involved exploring Australia for two years, picking fruit to fund her travels. This time extended her connection to nature and inspired her to pursue a PhD in Agricultural Science. Karen’s artistic journey launched in 2017 when she began creating highly detailed and vibrant artwork in coloured pencil, before diversifying into watercolour and soft pastel. Her scientific training is integral to her artwork, not only in selection of a subject, but in the detail and precision required to create realistic pieces. She is drawn to dynamic light and colour and is always on the lookout for natural Australian scenes in which she can add her own gentle touch.
