Artist Statement

Nature has always been my greatest source of inspiration. Growing up with a love of Australia's landscapes, wildlife, and birdlife fostered a lifelong appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and this continues to shape my work today.   In my late teens, I had the privilege of studying under the guidance of the late David Fowler in Brisbane, who introduced me to both oil painting and watercolour. His encouragement and teaching played an important role in shaping my early artistic development. Now in my seventies, I have embraced art once again with renewed enthusiasm. Over the past ten years, I have explored sketching and watercolour through classes at Murray's Art before joining Jeanne Cotter's soft pastel class in 2024. It was there that I discovered a deep appreciation for soft pastels, a medium that has become central to my current body of work. I am drawn to their ability to produce rich colour, subtle texture, and luminous light, allowing me to capture both the energy and tranquillity of my subjects. Whether painting a breaking wave, windswept coastal dunes, or the quiet intensity of a lion's gaze, I seek to create more than a faithful representation of the scene. My aim is to evoke a sense of place, inviting viewers to pause, appreciate the finer details of nature, and experience the calm, wonder, and emotion that inspired each work. For me, painting is both a creative challenge and a lifelong journey of learning. It brings immense satisfaction and provides an opportunity to share my appreciation for the natural world through art.

Based in Toowoomba, Queensland, I have had a lifelong passion for art and creativity. Drawing and painting have always been a source of enjoyment, allowing me to express my appreciation for the natural world and the beauty found in everyday moments. Over the past decade, I have returned to my artistic practice with renewed dedication, exploring sketching and watercolour before discovering a true passion for soft pastels. I am continually inspired by the medium's richness, versatility, and ability to capture light, atmosphere, and texture. My work reflects a love of nature and animals, from wildlife to tranquil landscapes, coastlines, and the quiet beauty of the environment around us. Through each piece, I aim to create a sense of connection, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and appreciate the remarkable details that are often overlooked. Art continues to be a rewarding journey of learning and discovery, and I hope my work conveys the same joy, wonder, and appreciation for the natural world that inspires me every time I paint.
