Artist Statement
I work with traditional painting and gilding techniques because I believe they still have an important place in the modern world. My practice is rooted in the European artisan traditions of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, using materials and methods that have changed little over centuries. Egg tempera, traditional gesso, bole, genuine gold leaf and natural pigments are not simply historical techniques - they each possess qualities that modern materials cannot fully replace. Whether I am creating a Renaissance-inspired panel painting, restoring an historic frame, applying gold leaf or producing a bespoke decorative commission, my aim is to achieve the highest level of craftsmanship while respecting the integrity of these time-honoured methods. I see my work as both creative practice and cultural continuity. By preserving and applying these traditional skills in contemporary Australia, I hope to demonstrate that they are not relics of the past, but living crafts capable of creating works of lasting beauty and significance.
Biography
Krissie Mayne is a Certified Master of Historical Painting Techniques, Gold Gilding and Heritage Conservation, bringing centuries-old European craftsmanship to contemporary Australian life through luxury decorative finishes, 24kt gold gilding, Renaissance-inspired fine art and bespoke commissions. She is a member of the Society of Gilders, Australia ICOMOS and the Picture Framers Guild of Australia. Raised in Bavaria, Krissie's passion for heritage began among castles, churches and museums, later working with traditional lime and distemper paints. After founding Precious Wall Finishes in 2012, she undertook extensive specialist training before completing Master Certification at Munich's Städtische Meisterschule and further Renaissance studies in Tuscany. Today her work encompasses Renaissance-inspired fine art, luxury decorative finishes, heritage conservation, Verre Églomisé and antique frame restoration, bringing European artisan traditions to Australia.
Influences
My work is deeply influenced by the European artistic traditions of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, particularly the workshops where painting, gilding, carving and decorative arts were practised as a unified craft. I draw inspiration from the craftsmanship of early Italian panel painters, historic architecture, ecclesiastical interiors and the enduring beauty of traditional materials.
