Artist Statement
My practice is inspired by the Australian landscape and the quiet moments of beauty that often go unnoticed. Working from photographs I have taken, I explore the translation of an image through watercolour, drawing and printmaking, allowing each medium to reveal something different about the subject. Living on a rural property near Toowoomba has taught me to slow down and observe the changing seasons, native wildlife and fleeting encounters that surround everyday life. Whether following the path of a bee through flowering lupins, discovering a sleeping koala or watching a butterfly rest amongst the branches, these moments remind me of the joy and peace that can be found through careful observation. Through my work I hope to encourage others to pause, reconnect with the natural world and find delight in the simple beauty that exists all around us. For me, making art is an act of paying attention.
Biography
Amy Houston is an emerging artist based near Toowoomba, Queensland, working across watercolour, drawing, printmaking and photography. Inspired by the landscapes and wildlife surrounding her home, her practice celebrates the quiet beauty found in everyday moments. Beginning with her own photographs, Houston explores how an image transforms through different artistic processes, translating observations of nature into expressive works that invite viewers to slow down and look more closely. Through careful observation and a love of light, colour and composition, she seeks to capture the sense of peace, curiosity and wonder found in the natural world. Currently undertaking a Bachelor of Visual Arts at the University of Southern Queensland, Houston continues to develop a practice centred on attentiveness, place and the restorative qualities of nature.
Influences
My work is influenced by the Australian landscape and the native wildlife surrounding my home near Toowoomba. Photography plays an important role in my practice, providing the starting point for many of my works as I explore how an image changes through watercolour, drawing and printmaking. I am inspired by the quiet beauty of everyday moments and the joy that comes from slowing down, observing closely and discovering wonder in the natural world.
