Artist Statement

I find myself drawn to the texture, colour and grain of wood as a medium. It is so varied and often challenging, each piece teaches you something. It is beautiful to reveal the colour and grain hiding inside a seemingly unassuming log of wood and to give it a new life as a sculpture with expression for all to enjoy. My sculpture work is usually equine related. I’ve lived around them my entire life, they are familiar and are part of many of my fondest memories. I’m inspired by their natural flow and beauty; such grace and power combined in one animal that I find it an endless source of fascination.

Biography

Passionate horse rider, rural mother and sculpture artist. My creative journey has been disjointed however even when I tried for a time to focus on other aspects of my life my creative flair has found its way back to me. Raised on a sheep and cattle station in central Queensland, rural lifestyle particularly horses are ingrained to my being. I dabbled with my creative process over the years however only recently found a niche that speaks to me. 6 years ago, I decided I would make a rocking horse from scratch. I’d long admired the sense of rhythm and calm they give to their rider but felt they often fail to capture the equine beauty. I had no prior carving skills, only a vision of what I wanted to create. Fast forward a few years, several rocking horses, two children and the realisation that I really enjoy creating wooden sculptures.

Influences

Hugely influenced by my lifetime spent around, working with and competing horses. Wood Carving influences include Harold Wakefield, Celine Moulin and The Stevenson Brothers.
