Artist Statement
I’m drawn to the vivid colour and shifting light of the Australian landscape, painting to honour both its fragile ecosystems and its cultural significance. Inspired by what I absorb on bush walks, I translate dancing shadows and sunlit tracks into energetic, layered surfaces, often with thick oil and palette-knife marks. My work aims to spark awe - inviting viewers to pause, look closely, and rediscover the beauty of the subtle and often overlooked landscape.
Biography
I am an artist based in Toowoomba, Queensland, whose practice is deeply inspired by the Australian landscape. Working primarily in oils, I am drawn to the en plein air tradition, using direct observation and immersion in nature to develop a personal creative voice. My work explores the vibrant interplay of colour, light, atmosphere, and place, seeking to capture not only the landscape's visual beauty but also its ecological, cultural, and everyday narratives. Through careful study of the environment and history, my paintings move beyond representation to foster a deeper appreciation of the natural world's resilience, complexity, and significance. I invite viewers to experience a sense of wonder and awe, encouraging them to see familiar landscapes from fresh perspectives. My art serves as a bridge between viewer and environment, inspiring reflection, connection, and renewed respect for the beauty and cultural significance of the Australian landscape. I have exhibited in a range of regional and emerging artist exhibitions, including The Emerging Artist Award Exhibition at The Judith Wright Art Centre with Flying Arts Alliance, the Toowoomba Grammar Art Show, FACETS: Fairholme Open Art Prize, and Hampton Festival Art Gallery. I received the UniSQ McGregor Retreat Bursary Award at FACETS: Fairholme Open Art Prize in 2023 and won the People’s Choice Award at the Hampton Festival Art Gallery in 2021.
Influences
My influences come from artists who have shaped how I see colour and light, and how I respond to the Australian landscape. Queensland artist William Bustard has been a deep source of inspiration for my work, particularly for the way he captures shadow, light, and Queensland’s distinctive character with remarkable sensitivity. I am always inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s vibrant colour and expressive brushstrokes, which infuse the painted surface with emotion and energy.
