Artist Statement
Bruce is an emotive artist searching for light and storyline. Painting traditional but semi-realism juxtaposing impressionism. He paints what he sees but more importantly he paints what he feels about what he sees. A Toowoomba based creative, Bruce derives from every conceivable influence and real-world experience, shaping & determining his ideas & perspectives. Bruce’s many years’ experience in construction underpins much of his perspective works as he adds imagination limited only by our own perceptions. Bruce has both practical & formal qualifications. “My early years were guided by the greats in Australian & overseas watercolour, Robert Wade, Robert Lovett, Greg Allen, David Taylor, Alvaro Castagnet, Herman Pekel, Joseph Zbukvic, Thomas Schaller and have followed that up with formal university qualifications through CQU, leading me to a more professional direction of what I am now. A rich heritage to widen one’s horizons. I have a belief in the workshop of ten thousand hours & while potential is great, you must put work & application to the task to be the best YOU and simply not a copy of someone else. I have evolved with my own style of storyline and light. Three times Toowoomba Royal Show Grand Champion of Paintings ’22,’23 &’26. He encompasses many themes; works are & can be quite varied but will always come back to the pursuit of light
Biography
Bruce has both practical & formal qualifications. Having learnt from some of the best in the world in watercolour; an emotive artist searching for mood, atmosphere, storyline & the pursuit of light focusing traditional semi realism juxtaposing impressionism in watercolour. Self-taught, Bruce will forever be indebted to his early days with world renowned Australian & overseas artists Robert Wade OAM, Robert Lovett, Greg Allen, David Taylor, Herman Pekel, Alvaro Castagnet, Joseph Zbukvic & Thomas Schaller, following that up with formal university qualifications through Central Queensland University, leading me to a more professional direction of what I am now. This is a rich heritage to widen one’s horizons. This full-time practising artist has an art studio in Kleinton, Queensland. He engages in workshops & teaching both locally & intrastate. “Teaching makes me a better artist.” He has learnt from some of the best in the world in watercolour & it takes a while to appreciate what is important, rejecting paintings that do not meet his increasingly exacting standards. “Work like that, art will find you.” Bruce exhibits twice a year. He conducts structured watercolour classes & travel workshops within Queensland. His sales include England, United States, New Zealand & Australia. He has a website & a social media footprint.
