Deborah Burton
Artist Statement
My art practice has grown from a lifelong love of creative expression into a full-time pursuit centred on acrylics and some mixed media. I’m fascinated by the interplay of texture, light, and movement, and I often explore this through layered surfaces, bold brushwork, and the use of materials like moulding paste. Inspired by the natural beauty in my gardens, I find endless motivation in painting both flora and fauna, landscapes, and abstract impressions of place. I enjoy the balance between control and spontaneity – from deliberate etching to the fluidity of house paint – and I’m always curious to see how a work will evolve on the canvas. Each painting is a reflection of both inner emotion and the world I’m connected to.
Biography
As a contemporary artist, I create vibrant, expressive works inspired by nature, community, and the beauty found in everyday life. I am especially drawn to colour, texture and storytelling. My Studio is based in Highfields, Queensland, where I live with my husband. My work is best known for colourful native animals and layered, intuitive compositions that reflect warmth, curiosity and creativity. Alongside of my own artistic practice, I am passionate about encouraging others to explore their creativity through workshops an shared art experiences. I believe art should be accessible, meaningful and joyful; something that brings people together. I am greatly inspired by the beauty of the natural world, especially the flora and fauna in my gardens, and by the freedom that comes with creating without boundaries.
Influences
My art is deeply rooted in the rhythms of the natural world, stirred by the play of light throughout life, the quiet presence of diverse fauna, and the ever-changing beauty found in my own garden.
