Artist Statement
Megan’s work captures the beauty of special places and the carefree spirit of childhood. Beginning with small seascapes of local beaches and Corio Bay, her practice evolved to include figures, allowing her to capture the playful freedom of children and the movement of life along the shore. Her landscapes and portraits explore how treasured moments with loved ones become intertwined with the spaces where they are shared. Using layered oils, texture, and soft washes of colour, she reflects both the physical character of a scene and the fleeting magic of movement, play, and memory.
Biography
Megan McInerney is a self-taught artist and biological scientist based in Geelong, Victoria. Having lived along the Victorian surf coast for most of her life, she is drawn to the ever-changing beauty of the Australian coastline and the quiet magic of childhood. She began painting in 2015, quickly falling in love with the versatility of oil on canvas, and her work now spans both landscapes and portraits, celebrating the connection between people and place. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Australia, and will be exhibiting at the Melbourne Affordable Art Fair in 2025. Megan joins Downlands under the collection of Aspire Gallery (Brisbane, Qld).
Influences
Megan is inspired by the freedom and joy of children, as well as the emotional resonance of landscapes tied to personal experience. She draws on moments of connection, whether in nature or familiar settings, to create works that balance realism with reflection.
