Artist Statement
Smith & Brooks’ artwork seeks to interpret native Australian plant species through the use of repetition, pattern and layering. As lovers of biodiversity and the natural environment, Kerrin and Jacky create with a focus on understanding and experiencing each species as an individual.
Biography
Smith & Brooks is a collaboration between two friends and artists, Kerrin Smith and Jacky Brooks. They both live on properties in the city/country fringe of Brisbane and draw inspiration from their bushland backyards. With a shared love of the natural landscape, painting and the print process, Kerrin and Jacky began working together in 2021 as a way of reconnecting to their environment. Kerrin has a Bachelor of Visual Arts while Jacky has a Bachelor of Digital Arts which creates a wonderful ‘opposites attract’ dynamic in their work. Smith & Brooks joins Downlands under the collection of Aspire Gallery (Brisbane, Qld).
