Biography

Mary Deutscher’s early life was spent living on cattle and grain properties on the Darling Downs.  Flying Arts tutor, Gwyn Pigott was a great influence during  those years providing pottery  lessons for rural folk.  Now a full time ceramicist, Mary works  from her garden studio,  Mary Street, Mt Lofty.  She is the creator of the ridiculously whimsical, the elegantly functional and   roughly textured garden ware. Raku clays feature in Mary’s garden designs;  hand painted under-glazed surfaces with Sgraffito on mid fired clays highlight her work.  Many of her pieces are displayed in her garden  studio and retail in local homeware outlets.  After spending recent time at the International Art Residency,  Le Maison de Beaumont Pertuis in Provence, France, Mary’s work has taken a turn to include hand built, fine porcelain pinch pots and tiles to add a new and colourful dimension to her repertoire.

OME Studio ( cafe and restaurant ware)  Gamboir  Provence  France  Working with Emme and Adrian from OME studio gave me insight into different ways of glazing and firing, slab building practices and marketing.
