Jen Marshall
Artist Statement
Jen uses a variety of mediums including watercolours, acrylic and often a touch of charcoal and ink. Her style reflects a certain looseness and accidental quality. She loves to go outside the lines and keeps her paintings loose, free and fun. Jen’s connection to the land and earth is reflected in her paintings. She loves to paint landscapes, animals (a favorite is bees) and florals. She also loves to delve into the spiritual side of her subjects. She hopes her paintings bring as much joy to the viewers as they do to her, the creator.
Biography
Raised in Tumut, a small town in the Snowy Mountains, and later working in the Gulf of Carpentaria before settling on a farm in the Darling Downs, Jen’s connection to nature and rural landscapes runs deep. This bond with the land and animals is evident throughout her work. A backyard beekeeper, Jen draws ongoing inspiration from bees and the natural world, along with landscapes, animals, and florals. Surprisingly, her practice has also expanded to include a growing interest in painting professional cyclists. Last year, she travelled to Italy to follow the Giro d’Italia, chasing stages through the countryside - an unforgettable experience. She spent much of her time sketching cyclists and capturing scenes from Italy, surrounded by the intensity, emotion, and atmosphere of the event and the unwavering determination of the riders. She was deeply moved by the blend of strength, resilience, and passion on display. That moment sparked the beginning of her cycling series, which continues to evolve. Through her work, Jen aims to share a sense of joy, movement, and connection to the world, including her admiration for cyclists she follows, hoping her paintings resonate with viewers as deeply as they do with her in their creation
