Artist Statement

For Charles, painting is a celebration of life. Drawn to the people she loves, vibrant colour, and the everyday objects that quietly tell our stories, she creates realist paintings with a playful Pop Art influence. Inspired by the belief that happiness is often found in the simplest things, Charles transforms the familiar into vibrant works that invite viewers to pause, smile, and rediscover the beauty in everyday life. What remains constant is her ability to find something worth celebrating in each object. That’s quite a rare quality.

Biography

Several years ago, I painted a piece of work for charity and rediscovered how essential art was to my life. What began as a single piece quickly grew into an enduring and deeply personal practice. I am largely self‑taught. I have never felt bound by the rules of genre, and I enjoy changing direction and exploring different subjects and approaches. I feel this freedom keeps my work fresh, curious and evolving. My studio was once a small bedroom belonging to one of my sons and it is now my creative sanctuary. My space is filled with meaningful objects, music, my dog Stella and paint. There is room for only one here and that suits me fine. Every object holds the potential for a painting. My work is shaped by careful observation, I use strong colour and a slow, deliberate process. I aim to quietly elevate the everyday and invite closer viewing. My husband, Terry Charles, also a talented photographer, influences my practice. He continually encourages me to observe light, shadow and detail. He is also my very clever framer.
