Artist Statement
Just as the mind struggles to comprehend the scale of the universe, I struggle to comprehend the immensity of the Pacific Ocean, even after sailing across it. Out there, my existence felt fragile. Our boat, a tiny white speck making its way home across the vast, vast sea. The porthole represents the link between the relative safety of the boat and the sea. It is symbolic of the journey. The view through the porthole changes constantly as the ocean heaves the boat up and down, from side to side, and as it moves across the oceans to new countries. There is a thin film of separation between the safety of the boat and the sea. Ropes and knots are intertwined with the life of a sailor. My work explores the symbolism of knots and ropes and my experience of sailing across oceans. Sailor’s knots are many and have various practical uses. Knots are strong and resilient, designed to hold in rough conditions. In my work they symbolise the deep ties forged between sailors during challenging experiences.
Biography
Based in Toowoomba, Queensland, Debi Thornely is a watercolour artist whose work is inspired by years spent sailing across some of the world's vast oceans. Her paintings explore the ever-changing moods of the sea, capturing moments of stillness, movement and immense power while reflecting the emotional impact of the journey. Working primarily in watercolour, Debi is drawn to the medium's fluidity and unpredictability, allowing the natural movement of pigment to mirror the rhythms of the ocean. Her paintings move beyond representation to explore themes of resilience, connection, freedom and hope. Ropes, knots and portholes recur throughout her work as symbols of the relationships, challenges and experiences that shaped her life.
