Johanna Guerin
Artist Statement
My creative practice explores ideas of story-telling, identity, memory, and nostalgia influenced by art as architecture, and the traditional techniques of millinery and hand-sewing. Through textiles, I reflect on the past to inform my connection to the present and future. An enquiry-based, physical exploration through material play imparts my energy and experience, layering and building the foundations for intergenerational conversations, echoing those that have come before us.
Biography
Born in 1976, Guerin has been practicing millinery since 1998. Originally trained by Elizabeth R., in the historic Brisbane Arcade, Guerin's wearable art has been worn worldwide. She has contributed to costume millinery and soft props in various stage productions. In more recent years, Guerin has focused on completing formal education within the arts as a means to research ideas, achieving a BA in Creative Arts (2017), a BA with Honours (1st Class) (2018), and a PhD in Visual Arts (2023), specialising in Site-specific art.
