Artist Statement
I believe the environment in which we were raised is central to how we see the world and live our lives. An Australian bush upbringing has engendered a healthy respect for and strong connection with Mother Nature. My close observations provide the inspiration for my work and inform my technique of layering and removing paint to create partially experimental works. The semi-abstract pieces reflect the diversity, colours and patterns found in Australian nature. There is a sense of uncovering the layers of the landscape as I work. My still life paintings focus on simplicity and contrast in colour and form.
Biography
Jenny is a Toowoomba-based artist whose art practice features semi-abstract landscapes and still life paintings on canvas in oil or mixed media. Jenny began exhibiting with the first Hampton Festival Art Show in 2003 and won painting of the show twice, in 2007 and 2019. She held her first solo exhibition titled Landscapes of Change at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery in January 2021. Jenny participated in the local In-studio Art Trail in August 2023. She also held successful solo abstract landscape exhibitions at Scrumptious Reads Gallery in Brisbane in June 2024 and at Roma Bungil Gallery in October-November 2024. She has been a regular exhibitor at Downlands College Art Show, Toowoomba Grammar Art Show and Aspects Art Show at Goondiwindi over several years.
Influences
Abstract landscape artists such as Fred Williams, John Olsen and Brett Whitely and abstract artists Elizabeth Cummings and Sally Gabore.
