Artist Statement

My photographic process is about my fascination with the way our eyes and brain interpret the visible world. By seeing differently, the images become more about light, movement, shape and essence of the scene. Utilising movement and double exposures techniques in camera leaves an abstract impression of my world. As soon as light and dark are manipulated, the familiar interpretation is lost and we enter the unknown world of my images. I want my images to confront the viewer with the emotions of their own imagination. Unable to use a painter’s brush to capture the colours and moods of moments in time, I use a digital camera. Land and nature soothes the soul and washes away the residues of conflict and struggles of everyday life. Beauty, colour, mood and light are my friends within my images. The quietness and being in one with nature – the sounds, the breeze, and the wonder - draw me in

Biography

I am a past Downlands student. Judi's artistic journey is a testament to the power of self-expression and a deep passion for exploring the beauty in the world around her. A self-taught photographer from Highfields, Judi has honed her craft by allowing her instincts to guide her, rather than following traditional formal training. Her perspective on the world is uniquely her own, seen through the lens of a camera that acts as her “paint brush,” and her ability to convey emotion and story through her photography speaks to her dedication to the art form. Her work is characterized by her love of colour, light, shape, and form. Judi is drawn to the abstract possibilities that these elements offer, and her photography captures the very essence of nature's beauty. Through her eyes, mundane moments are transformed into stunning works of art, inviting viewers to see what they might otherwise overlook. She emphasizes the importance of creating a space where people can pause and truly "feel" the essence of the moment. A key element of Judi’s approach is her desire to draw viewers into her images by encouraging them to discover the story embedded within each composition.

Influences

The biggest influences in my photographic journey are painters like Albert Namatjira, Sydney Nolan, Pro Hart and my Great Aunt’s. I have explored the works of impressionistic artist like Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who have influenced my move into abstract and impressionism using intentional camera movement (ICM) and multiple exposure to achieve this look. Photographers Michael Kenna, Graham Burstow, Chris Friel, Deborah Sheedy, Ellen Jantzen and Ernest Hass.
