This lyrical original work by Norman Lindsay, was created in 1934, towards the end of his etching career.“The Glade” is beautiful in its simplicity & romanticism. Lindsay bathes the young women in warm sunlight filtering through the trees as they shelter in the forest glade, either contemplating a swim or having just been for one. In this beautiful piece, Lindsay used the difficult Intaglio technique of Aquatint to create the dappled effect of the light on the trees & the soft tones of the etching which complement the delicacy of the women’s skin & the lighthearted feel of the work. Original aquatints of “The Glade” are held in the Queensland Art Gallery, Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, National Trust Norman Lindsay Gallery & Museum and the Mitchell Library in Sydney.
