This image explores the Gospel of Mark, 7:14-23 “For it is from within, from men’s hearts, that evil intentions emerge” - and also Jeremiah, 17: 5-10, “A curse on the man who puts his trust in man, who relies on things of the flesh, whose heart turns him from the Lord…
A blessing on the man who puts his trust in the Lord, with the Lord for he is hope.”
This painting laments the vicious cycle of sinfulness: the suffocating thorns seeded in our hearts. This cycle is broken by prayer and humility as portrayed through the open hands; and by the Grace of the Holy Spirit - through the symbolism of the dove, cross and calming blue sky.
The small candle is a symbol of Baptism. The flame of faith may be weak and vulnerable all alone but in community (many flames coming together) this flickering light has potential to transform into something formidable. Fire has the ability to cleanse and replace the thorny landscape with clear skies and renewed hope and peace.

Together, the series of images represents HOPE. By reflecting upon the Sacred Heart of Jesus, nurturing our faith by studying the Word, through reflection, prayer and receiving Holy Communion, we are all able to be transformed in love, and have great potential to lovingly transform our world. As Christians, we are called to do this.
