Bees and Papal crests - a study
34 x 30 x 2cmAcrylic on ply
The humble bee is a symbol of Christ, of his forgiveness (sweet as honey), with his justice (sting), and Christian virtues (humility of worker bees and their behaviour towards their queen). A bee also appears on a Papal crest - that of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini who was elected to the papal throne in 1623, as Pope Urban VIII, though this image is not a faithful depiction of that crest - merely a study.
