Laying Low

20 x 30 x 2 cmSandstone, roadstone, marble and stainless steel on foamcore board
A photo taken by a friend, of a hare crouching amongst the grass stems, ignited the idea of this piece. I wanted to capture the stance and attitude while using traditional techniques and materials. Helidon sandstone, collected from the sides of local roads provided the bulk of the material, while I used road stone and some scrap marble to augment the palette.
Traditional tools of hammer and hardy (a chisel embedded in a stump) have been used to cut the shapes in a way that has not changed since Roman times. Local stone and local fauna create a unique feel to this piece.
