Lex was a highly regarded Fraser Coast watercolourist. His connections to Toowoomba include studying under David Taylor at the McGregor Summer School. Having sold his first painting in 1975, when he was 36 years old, he lived, worked and painted in and around Maryborough. Lex was particularly recognised for his subtle renderings of architectural subjects and his landscape work of rivers and water which showcased his technique and abilities to evoke mood and light through watercolour. In later life he also painted in France and Spain.
Highly popular with Brisbane collectors, he held three one man exhibitions at the Oriel Gallery at Ascot from 2004. Following his death, there was an impressive retrospective of his work held in Gatakers Art Space in Maryborough in 2019.
