Wilna ten Cate

Wilna ten Cate

  • Artist’s Statement

Wilna ten Cate is a Brisbane based artist currently managed by Aspire Gallery in Brisbane. Her happy art medium is a combination of graphite, ink, gold leaf and various paint, but Wilna also regularly experiments with watercolour and oils.

The essence of her art is a combination of Symbolism, pre-Raphaelites, Art Novae and cemetery art. Most of Wilna's artwork is not a mirror image of the reality but a fantasy projection. The scenes depicted tell a specific story from her personal or imaginary experience, ans she aims to stir a particular emotion in people, often confronting them with subjects that are commonly not talked about.

  • Biography

Wilna was born and raised in South Africa, lived a while in Papua New Guinea and currently resides in Australia with her husband.

After school, Wilna started with her BA Arts degree, but her type of work at a leading newspaper group dictated that she should instead change to a degree in Marketing & Consumer behaviour. Art has always been her passion, however, and after we moved to Papua New Guinea in 2011 and then to Australia, she now has the time to practice her creativity daily.

  • Influences

Wilna's work is influenced by European cemetery and church art, music lyrics, poems, mythology, different cults and daily heartbreak and happiness of ordinary people. She is also influenced by artists like Gustav Klimt, Paul Gauguin, Aubrey Beardsley, Sydney Long, Alphonse Mucha and modern-day artists like Alessandra Maria, Yoann Lossel, Yakato Yamamoto.
