  • Artist’s Statement

For this exhibition, my artworks are based on my experiences and encounters with memorable characters or situations. Although I work in various art media, I have chosen pastels for these animal portraits, allowing me to capture the subject or mood quickly, then spend time finessing each piece.

    Summary
I studied ceramics and art at high school and continued to learn various crafts as personal hobbies, including painting, wood carving and lead light. A recent return to painting and learning the techniques required with various art mediums has gone from hobby to passion. Combining a love for painting and an interest in poetry and writing, I have written, illustrated and published four children’s books and am currently working on further projects. I have volunteered my time to create murals for several local school playgrounds and the interior hallway at Headspace, Toowoomba.

  • Influences

My main influence has been the impressionists, especially Monet, Van Gogh, McCubbin and Gruner. I remember admiring 'Spring Frost' by Ethol Gruner as a child. It captivated me each time we visited the Sydney Art Gallery. The love the purity of colour and movement in selected works by Monet and Van Gogh. With McCubbin's works, the story-telling has me spellbound.
