Artist’s Statement
As a textile artist I enjoy the flexibility of fabric as both a surface on which to mark a design but also the ability to move basic functional clothing to eye catching art. I employ the ancient Japanese cloth marking techniques of Katazome and Shibori .
Biography
Since breaking free of the work day shackles I have been able to embrace my love of colour, surface design and fabric manipulation to express my creativity.
Influences
My designs are created by strongly influenced by ancient Japanese design marking techniques on fabric. Katazome is a printing technique of which uses Katagami ( stencil cut from Mulberry paper) and a rice paste as a resist for both free hand and stencil formed to create designs inspired by nature.Shibori manipulation techniques can involve folding, wrapping or stitching fabric to create unique designs. I colour my work with natural dyes from plants and the rich volcanic soil of Toowoomba.
