Artist’s Statement
The disciplines I engage with are process driven. With my painting practice It is the challenge of making marks, responding to accidents, exploring colour relationships and balancing form that are my concerns. In the same moment I would like the viewer to slow down and meditate a while.
Other aspects of my practice examine the power of words, and how text may be disarmed and become an aesthetic device, meaningless or augmented yo create alternative meanings.Biography
Justin graduated from USQ at the turn of the century. He has worked as an artist and arts worker across Queensland for over two decades. He currently lives and works in Townsville and maintains his arts practice across multiple disciplines.
Influences
My key influence is postwar art, particularly painters, figurative and abstract. There is something to learn from diverse sources.
First Australian art is significant to me as it stands against Western traditions and demonstrates how art is integrated as a whole world view and way of being.
The medium of advertising and messaging has recently become important to me. Living in a post truth world knowing what is ‘real ‘ and what is not I believe is challenging collective mental health.
