Johanna De Maine

Johanna De Maine

  • Artist’s Statement

In order to realize my artform I have come to terms with hybrid or cross disciplinary practices using quasi industrial processes that are still within the economic reach of ceramists. I have married modern technologies with an ancient craft by incorporating the use of the computer, vinyl cutter and sandblaster to facilitate an experimental approach to my work through layering. As well as this I have added overglaze as just another layer in the ceramic continuum.

  • Biography

Past Landsborough long term resident and artist, now based in Meringandan West and Kyushu, Johanna De Maine commenced potting in1971. Since she has had in excess of 40 solo exhibitions, participated in 200+ group exhibitions and won numerous awards. Her work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia as well in public art galleries, museums and government collections both in Australia and overseas.

She has exhibited extensively overseas and her work is in collections of HRH Queen Elizabeth II of England, Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark and the Governor General of Australia.

Since 2017 she has been in a partnership with Tatsuya Tsutsui, an award winning, master porcelain artist from Arita, Japan. Together they have established a workshop both in Morai, Kyushu, Japan and Meringandan West on the Darling Downs.

Both operate as individual artists as well as collaborating on major works.

  • Influences

I admire the work of artists Matisse and Klimt both of whom were also influenced by the Japanese aesthetic. There are a lot of potters whose work I admire. I admire skill as well as expression.

The people who stand out for me are Cathy Jefferson, Canada, Tom Turner, USA, Derek Emms, UK, David Leach, UK and of course my partner Tatsuya Tsutsui. Tatsuya is a master porcelain artist who after studying oil painting at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, trained with Inoue Manji.
