  • Artist’s Statement

Historic, rural structures hold a great fascination for me. There is an unpretentious beauty in the rustic, visual heritage bequeathed to us by past generations of farmers. My art embraces rural fences and rails, iron gates, twisted barbed-wire and lop-sided letterboxes, and incorporates these man-made elements, with our distinctively Australian wildlife. I also love the majestic avenues of trees throughout the city, their bare disfigured branches have a beauty which I love to share with others.
I have always delighted in the delicate and understated beauty of historic Australian homes. Their shaded verandahs, intricate lace fretwork, and latticed gates have an intrinsic beauty which enthrals me. As an artist, I love the challenge of exploring these shapes and patterns in my work.

  • Biography

JENNY HARTLEY is a Queensland Artist who has been an active painter since 1990 creating traditional representational work in Watercolour, Acrylic and Graphite.
Jenny’s childhood on the family farm instilled in her a deep love of the natural environment, for the colour, light and shade that surrounded her. Historic, rural structures also hold an equal fascination. Jenny has held eight Exhibitions and for the last 30 years and exhibits her work at various Art Exhibitions, winning a wide variety of Awards. Her Commissions have gone all over the world, including England, America, New Zealand and Japan. Jenny paints any subject that inspires her, but she has become well known for her Australian birds and her translucent watercolour paintings of beautiful flowers.

  • Influences

I'm influenced by the way light can transform ordinary objects, creating for me moments of pure delight and inspiration, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. This awakens in me the need to create filled with shadows and bright glowing light. Some Australian Artists who inspire me with their portrayal of Australian light are Lloyd Rees, Elliot Gruner, Arthur Streeton, Phillip Fox, Charles Condor and Hans Heysen.

  • Awards

There have been many awards over the years, but the awards of the Kenneth McQueen Watercolour Award, and 1st Prize of the Wildlife Flora and Fauna Art Prize at the Brisbane RNA Art Show are most valued to date.
