Jean Bennett
Artist’s Statement
Art has always been a constant in my life there has not been a time when I have not used art either in relation to work or personal expression. During my training as an art therapist my work changed dramatically and became much more personal and inclusive of the figure. In my work I like to reference the body. The way we go through various transitions and experiences in our lives and how our identities shift during these processes is encompassed in the work. The materials I use are also important. I like to use materials and methods that will
add additional layers of meaning to the work. Sculpture fills me with a sense of
accomplishment and integrity, thus proving a most amenable vehicle for translating inner vision to outer reality.
I sculpt from the inside out. Though I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, my unconscious is the undisputed project manager.
Grosz's ideas of the internal and external body are used in that they are inseparable: the internal merging with the external.
The concrete, three-dimensional nature of sculpting frees my imagination and provides opportunities throughout the process for the materials to dictate in some instances the direction the work takes. Jesmonite is the material of choice having two-parts, a liquid and a powder. When combined, the material cures from a liquid to hardened state. The transition of the material is an interesting process and adds to the techniques employed. The idea of two
elements coming together to create one also holds a narrative in many ways symbolically and I will often work with this concept figuratively.
Jesmonite is known as the chameleon material because it can replicate a diverse range of textures and fine details. The possibilities with Jesmonite materials are endless. Working with Jesmonite has allowed an innovative way to adapt known ways of working. In the past I have worked with traditional materials such as clay, stone, and fiber.Biography
