My current artistic practise primarily consists of mixed media works exploring the themes of fashion and the avant-garde through portraiture. The works often have a dreamy, surreal nature and are narrative based. I work within the genre of mixed media art as it allows me to create intricate and ornate art prints by combining multiple mediums such as painting, illustration, printmaking and digital elements.
Isabella Travers is a Toowoomba based artist who primarily works within the mediums of sculpture and mixed media painting. Isabella has completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts at the University of Southern Queensland and has participated in a number of local group exhibitions. Her current artistic practise consists of mixed media works exploring the themes of fashion, the avant-garde, fragility, impermanence and ritual through portraiture. The works often have a dreamy, surreal nature and are narrative based, encouraging the viewer to delve into the work in order to discover the story of the person portrayed. A recurring symbol that filters throughout her work is the butterfly. She regularly chooses to interweave a subtle butterfly motif into her works, as a butterfly represents something that is fragile, beautiful and quick to die. However, it can also be used as a metaphor for hope, rebirth and transformation, themes that permeate throughout her artistic practice
One of the main sources of inspiration for my work is avant-garde fashion. I am particularly influenced by designers such as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Alessandro Michele. These designers pull references from history and combine them with modern tailoring to create dramatic works that often play with the ideas of wearable / unwearable, storytelling and contrasting opposites. I am also influenced by the artists of the surrealist movement in particularly Salvador Dali and Frida Kahlo.
