Artist’s Statement
The natural environment is my painting obsession as I form connections with my home surrounds and link the way place can create a sense of belonging and connection to nature around. I worked from my home studio in Burnett Heads for the last 13 years and now in the hills surrounding the Lockyer Valley and I am creatively motivated and inspired by the location and sense of place :whether it’s trees, my potted plants waiting to be put into the garden, the birds, the hills or the mountains in the distance.
Biography
Helen Richards originally trained in Textiles: print and design, but this evolved into a love of painting acrylic landscapes. Her arts training includes a Bach of Education, Assoc. Dip.Vis. Arts (Textile and Design) and Grad Dip in Business Comm, and she has been a visual arts educator, both in Australia and overseas. Helen has exhibited in Brisbane and around Queensland and her paintings are in collections throughout Australia. She is currently represented by Revival Art and Design, Albion, Tiny Tree Gallery, Cleveland and Art Lovers Australia.
Influences
Having initially studied Fabric and Textile design before painting, I find that I’m increasingly taking many cues from the mid-modern tapestries and interior fabric design that I grew up with. Picasso and Matisse have had a strong influence on my bright colour selection.
