Artist’s Statement
My inspiration comes from the natural world and places that have a story to tell. Nature is an escape and a place of solace for me, and this is represented by the bush, the mountains, the creeks and man-made landscapes of gardens. I see beauty in many aspects of nature from grand waterfalls to small rocks and my work is a plea to appreciate the natural world.
My paintings take you to a happy place where your mind can rest, slow down and think. It gives me great joy to have a collector choose my painting to take home to be a part of their life, their story.
I work mainly in acrylics, taking photos of places I have been and taking these home to re-create in paint. In my home studio, I paint bush scenes and plants and flowers from my own garden. Walking in the bush, taking in views from hilltops, sitting quietly in the garden - these are the things that give me pleasure and I hope will do the same for the viewer.
Biography
I retired from a career spanning 45 years in Education in 2020, as a Principal of a large Brisbane primary school, and this is when I was drawn to make painting my full-time pre-occupation. I had always looked to creating and making as a respite from a sometimes-chaotic life, and at times of extreme stress during my career, painting became my escape.
Whilst following a teaching career, I engaged in many creative pursuits - in decoupage, mosaics, ceramic painting, making my own clothes, making and selling hand-painted clothing, and painting. I prefer to repaint second-hand furniture to buying it new, and like to recycle items to make garden sculptures.
After retirement, during the past 3 years I have entered competitions in rural and regional shows, participated in exhibitions as a member of Arts Connect Ipswich and the Ipswich Art Society.
Influences
I enjoy the art of the great painters through history, and particularly the work of the Impressionists such as Monet and the post Impressionists such as Gauguin and Seurat. I spend time with the art from many modern artist across the world whose work creates that sense of beauty and wonder - Randall David Tipton, Conrad P Clarke, Francis Sills, Robert Kushner, Textile artist Frances Ryan and Australian artists such as Vanessa Ashcroft and Cressida Campbell.
