  • Artist’s Statement

Displacement, rupture and fragmentation are themes that have run through my work for some time. This connection I believe has its roots in my migrant experience.
I became interested in this as I considered my migrant status on Aboriginal land in the Northern Territory. Speaking more broadly I am a Scottish migrant who came here when I was nine. ‘My place’ is located in those places that express the dislocation of my migrant experience. The aesthetic developing in my work gives expression to this connection to disruption and renewal and is itself an expression of a broader contemporary world view.

  • Biography

    David LeMay MFA.
I was born in Scotland and moved to Brisbane in 1976 at age nine. I have a Masters in Fine arts by research from Charles Darwin University 2002. I graduated with honours from the Art school, University of Tasmania 1996. I have been a practicing artist for 30 years and have lived and exhibited across Australia.

  • Influences

There are of course many influences on my practice, many of which are not visual artists. Ted Hughes the poet, Joni Mitchell - singer song writer, Samuel Becket the play writer and novelist/performance artist to name a few. But as far as my mark making goes Id have to say Cy Twombly is an artist I continually return to for inspiration and guidance.
