  • Artist’s Statement

Memory, Colour, Connection. These are the spheres that I draw upon when creating my art.

I portray my experience and interactions with the landscape through my interpretation of colour, texture and light in an expressionist style. Expressionism is an art form that romanticises the subject through use of bold colours and formations, drawing on emotion and memory.

I have predominately been a watercolourist for many years before taking up oil painting in 2020. Oil painting has extended my art practice, allowing me to paint my visceral reaction to the rich texture and vibrant colours characteristic to oil paints. Watercolour and oils are the yin and yang of my deep sense of creativity, and I love to explore with both mediums.

  • Biography

Cynthia Copley is an award-winning landscape artist from Ipswich, Queensland, who captures her responses and interactions with the natural world through colour and texture, drawing on observation, memory and emotion.

Cynthia deeply observes her surroundings, noticing the intricate patterns, the entangled beauty and the shifting light which are the essence of time and place.

In 2021 Cynthia was awarded the inaugural Mervyn Moriarty Landscape Prize through the Queensland Regional Art Awards. This prize has been a significant highlight in Cynthia's emerging art career and has provided numerous opportunities to travel throughout Queensland, sharing her art practice with school students in regional and remote areas through Flying Arts Alliance.

  • Influences

The artist who has influenced my art practice most significantly is Vienna born Judy Cassab (1920-2015). Whilst well known for her portraiture, having won the Archibald twice, it is Cassab's expressionist landscapes that I come back to again and again. I have recently read the biography of Cassab and my admiration for this artist has no limits.

Other influences include Australian painter Nicholas Harding (1956 - 2022) and Austrian expressionist painter Egon Schiele (1890-1918).
